Experts say a successful kitchen remodeling project depends on making choices that reflect the kitchen’s expanded role in today’s households.
Kitchens have become places to spend time together as a family, to entertain, and yes, even to cook.
Although many people think of high-end finishes and appliances when they think of a kitchen remodel, easy maintenance, hidden storage and sustainable materials are among the current trends.
A remodeling contractor conveyed to me that he finds a trend to be eliminating the dining room and combining the space of the kitchen and dining room together, giving the homeowner a lot more social space.
After all whenever there is a party at the home, everyone always gathers in the kitchen area. So by having a large open space it gives more gathering space for family and friends.
This theme of getting away from, in older homes too, closed off kitchens by knocking down walls seemed to be a popular trend. An open kitchen is more of a gathering place, especially where it is centrally located in the house.
One Realtor I spoke to said, “More and more of my clients are finding appealing kitchens that are designed as gathering places for the family and friends. Some of their favorite features include computer desks, huge islands, fireplaces, and comfortable seating areas.”
