“Mortgage loan applications bounced back last week as rates fell and end-of-the-year holiday hoopla faded,” according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Athens Georgia Named a Member of the 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations

January 14, 2009

98-06de11fd-e693-41ef-bff1-dfa5be5d47bbThe National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Athens Georgia, our “Classic City” as a Member of its 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations!

They point out that “the vibrant city of Athens, Georgia, is known for its distinct blend of traditional heritage and trend-setting southern culture, a mix of historic attractions, a dynamic downtown and a lively music scene.  Athens, called the “classic city” because of its name and neo-classical architecture, is home to the University of Georgia and a growing artistic community.”

The National Historic Trust goes on to note the architecture of Athens and that there are 16 neighborhoods registered with the National Register of Historic Places.  These include four (4) houses that are operating museums open for daily tours.  There are also more than 20 African American heritage sites, and Athens is a part of the Antebellum Trail.  From its architecture to the number of Confederate leaders whose homes where located in one of its many historic districts, Athens is a hotbed of Southern American heritage.

Whether you live in Athens or are considering a visit, Athens is a featured location on regional driving trails, including the Civil War Heartland Trail, which includes the world’s only double-barreled cannon as well as the Cook and Brothers Armory, where Civil War rifles were manufactured.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation ended up its comments on our town by noting, “For nearly 30 years, the revitalization and preservation of downtown Athens has kept the district pulsing with energy from morning through night.  The restored Victorian-era buildings that line the heart of the downtown area house an eclectic mix of more than 70 specialty retailers, 60 popular eateries and 50 taverns and nightspots.”
